The Textile Waste-to-Product Design Awards 2006 is an initiative of the Council of Textile and Fashion Industries of Australia with assistance from the Department of Environment and Conservation (NSW). It arose from a Cleaner production project undertaken by the two groups over 2004 and 2005.

While the current competition is restricted to New South Wales we plan to expand to other states in 2007.

What is it?

This is an industry and Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) supported program to build awareness amongst designers of the waste and environmental aspects of textile based products and the design opportunities that exist to reuse textile wastes in efforts to become more eco-efficient in our path toward sustainability.

The Waste- to-Product Design Awards is a competition for tertiary design students who are given access to industry wastes, from fabric off-cuts to used clothing, with the objective of designing new products.

How does the competition work?

There will be three categories of design for these awards:

In each category students from tertiary design courses will be offered a range of textile wastes, as can be provided by the companies participating , from which to design new products.

The competition has finished for 2006. Check back here regularly for details on the 2007 competition.

The students can investigate further wastes if needed, but no assistance in sourcing these wastes will be available.

Designs should be prototyped and will be displayed for an appointed panel to assess the designs on a number of criteria including environmental impact of manufacture and overall environmental benefit.

An appointed panel will judge the designs and award certificates of achievement for worthy entries. Prizes will be funded through industry contributions and may include financial rewards, industry based services such as digital printing and potentially internship opportunities.
