There are many competitions available to Australian fashion and textile designers and design students.

Some have generous prizes that lead to greater opportunities. Each of of the State-based fashion festivals have awards. Others are conducted by government, industry bodies, colleges and private entities.

Australasian Student Design Awards

The Australasian Student Design Awards feature multiple categories, including fashion design and textile design.

Entry is open to students currently studying full time equivalent or apprentice tertiary courses at a Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma or Degree level, or graduated from any of these courses in Semester 2 of the previous year.

Australian International Design Awards

The Australian International Design Awards program has been rewarding design and innovation excellence in Australia for more than 50 years. The AIDA accepts professionally designed products and services across many sectors, including 'Architectural and Interior Products' for textile design.

Entries for 2012 open on 1st Feb, and close on 30 March.

Australians in New York Fashion Foundation Internship

The philosophy of the Australians in New York Fashion Foundation is to help young Australians gain world-class, hands-on experience in New York, and return home with internationally recognized training and contacts.

Applications open up each August.

 

Banksia Environmental Awards

Regarded as the most prestigious environmental awards in Australia, with multiple categories including the Water Award, the Clean Technology Award and the SME Business Sustainability Award.

Congratulations to fair trade clothing company 3Fish, nominated in 2011 for both the Leading In Sustainability - Setting The Standard For Small Organisations award and the People's Choice Award.

2011 winners were announced at the Awards Presentation ceremony on October 28 and are listed on the Banksia Environmental Foundation website.

LMFF Designer Award

The nation's most prestigious and highly regarded fashion award for emerging design talent. Past winners of the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival designer award include Toni Maticevski, Friedrich Gray, Josh Goot, Yeojin Bae, Romance Was Born,  Dion Lee, and in 2011, Song for the Mute.

Applications open again in 2012.

Premier's Sustainability Awards (Victoria)

The Premier's Sustainability Awards recognise Victorian businesses, institutions, communities & individuals that demonstrate outstanding leadership & contribute to a more sustainable future.

Amongst the 2011 winners were TCF enterprises Godfrey Hirst Australia - winner of the Premier's Recognition Award - and organic fair trade clothing manufacturer 3Fish - winner of the Small Business Award.

Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards 365 - fashion category

The Qantas Spirit Of Youth Awards 365 (SOYA 365) offers fashion designers aged 18 - 30 the chance to leap to the next level with a trip of a lifetime to London Fashion Week in February 2012.

The winning designer will also be offered a professional mentorship with iconic Australian label Zimmermann and a $5,000 cash prize.

UPDATE: Sydney designer Michael Lo Sordo has been anounced as this year's winner. Shortlisted entries can be viewed at the SOYA website.

The George Alexander Foundation/ISS Institute Fellowship

Awarded annually, the George Alexander Foundation/ISS Institute Fellowship is an overseas fellowship open to technical/trades people and artisans under 35 years of age to further develop their skills, knowledge and experience and assist in the reduction of skill deficiencies in key Australian industries.

The Textile Institute National Student Design Awards

The annual Textile Institute Southern Australian Section (TISA) design competition is for full time fashion students across Australia. It provides students with the opportunity to participate in an exciting competition that brings together industry partners and potential employees - the future of the TCF industry.

Awards are held annually, and registrations open up each June.
